All BCC routes are designed to be as safe as possible. We try to choose the safest routes depending on traffic and road conditions and availability of bike routes, paths, or shoulders. In addition, the Club seeks to stay abreast of road hazards and construction reported by local transportation agencies to avoid these situations. However, cycling has inherent risks even on the safest routes, so the Club does not guarantee safety on its routes.
All BCC rides are “no drop” assuming you can maintain the minimum pace based on the average speed you can sustain on the flats for five miles. It is 18 mph for the A group and 14 mph for the B group. See “Club Ride Polices” for more info on this. If you are unable to maintain the minimum pace in your group, the Ride Organizer has the right to inform you that we cannot wait up for you. This rarely happens, but if it does, the Ride Organizer will insure that you know a safe route back. If you don’t meet the minimum requirement for the B Group, the Club will assign you a cycling mentor to help you get up to speed outside of group rides.
Starting times vary according to the time of year. Unless otherwise noted, all of our rides are intermediate level rides. However, for those who want a slower more relaxed pace, a “B” ride group will follow a similar route at a slower pace and for a shorter distance. Please make sure your bike is in good mechanical condition–including properly inflated tires. Remember to bring your helmet, spare tube, and water bottle.
REGULAR WEEKLY RIDES
Tuesday Evening Boulder Beer Ride (map)
Road Bike Ride – This ride starts at the Boulder Beer Pub and Brew House and tours the flatlands in the surrounding Boulder area. Approximate distance is 25-30 miles in peak season and shorter if the sun is going down early. We’ll return to Pub by sundown. After the ride, stick around and enjoy something to eat and/or drink. The food is good, and the drinks are cold! This is a great ride to get a little exercise and socialize after a long day and a great way to start the week.
Thursday Evening Ride – three possible starting points include Bacaro Venetian Taverna, 921 West Pearl Street, 4580 Restaurant, 4580 North Broadway (map), and Murphy’s Restaurant in Table Mesa Shopping Center (on Broadway in south Boulder).
Saturday – Location Varies. The length and starting time of this ride will depend on the weather and time of year. We will try to use routes that we normally don’t ride during the week. They will tend to be longer.
OCCASIONAL RIDES
This includes Weekend Sag Wagon, Hybrid, Training, and Off-Season Rides. Members may also propose special rides to the Route Planning Committee. Please check the calendar and Spoke “n Word newsletter for details and updates.
North County Hybrid Ride
Mtn/Hybird Meets in the Serrano’s parking lot in the Gunbarrel plaza just south of King Soopers on Lookout Rd. Average speed 10 to 15 mph. Afterward at Serrano’s enjoy your favorite beverage and food on the outdoor patio. Some gravel trails and dirt roads. Average ride time 1 1/2 hours.
Wednesday Evening Training Ride – Location Varies. This is for members who are training for century rides. It generally begins in late July. Check calendar on the website for schedule.
Off-Season Rides
When Daylight Savings time is not in effect (11/15-3/15) the sun goes down too early and the evening rides end. However, on those sunny midwinter days when the snow is off the street we will ride midday on Sundays and once midday on a work day. Since they are dependent on the weather these rides will be announced in special emails from the Club. Don’t expect many rides between December 1 and February 1. Rides are cancelled if accuweather.com reports a “RealFeel” temperature of less than 40 degrees 1 hour before the start time.
NCAR Repeats. This is the only ride in Boulder where you can get a pump, grab a bite, and get back to work, all in an hour. Starts at 12 noon usually on Tuesday from Cafe Sole in Table Mesa Shopping Center. It goes up Table Mesa Drive to the NCAR parking lot. Do as many returns as you want between the top of Vassar and NCAR. If the weather is great and time permits, we may occasionally do Flagstaff instead or head out to Eldorado.
Off-Season Weekend Rides. We will try to do a longer ride on Sundays, weather permitting.
